According to Krashen’s affective filter hypothesis, students who are highly motivated
have a strong sense of self, enter a learning context with a low level of anxiety, and are much
more likely to become successful language acquirers than those who do not. Affective factors,
such as motivation, attitude, and anxiety, have a direct impact on foreign language acquisition.
Horwitz et al. (1986) mentioned that many language learners feel anxious when learning foreign
languages. Thus, this study recruits 100 college students to fill out the Foreign Language
Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) to investigate language learning anxiety. Then, this study
designs and develops an affective tutoring system (ATS) to conduct an empirical study. The
study aims to improve students’ learning interest by recognizing their emotional states during
their learning processes and provide adequate feedback. It is expected to enhance learners’
motivation and interest via affective instructional design and then improve their learning
performance.

In this paper, we describe a prototype of web-based intelligent handwriting education
system for autonomous learning of Bengali characters. Bengali language is used by more than
211 million people of India and Bangladesh. Due to the socio-economical limitation, all of the
population does not have the chance to go to school. This research project was aimed to develop
an intelligent Bengali handwriting education system. As an intelligent tutor, the system can
automatically check the handwriting errors, such as stroke production errors, stroke sequence
errors, stroke relationship errors and immediately provide a feedback to the students to correct
themselves. Our proposed system can be accessed from smartphone or iPhone that allows
students to do practice their Bengali handwriting at anytime and anywhere. Bengali is a
multi-stroke input characters with extremely long cursive shaped where it has stroke order
variability and stroke direction variability. Due to this structural limitation, recognition speed is
a crucial issue to apply traditional online handwriting recognition algorithm for Bengali
language learning. In this work, we have adopted hierarchical recognition approach to improve
the recognition speed that makes our system adaptable for web-based language learning. We
applied writing speed free recognition methodology together with hierarchical recognition
algorithm. It ensured the learning of all aged population, especially for children and older
national. The experimental results showed that our proposed hierarchical recognition algorithm
can provide higher accuracy than traditional multi-stroke recognition algorithm with more
writing variability.

At present, the escalation of violence has been intense nationally and globally due to variety of reasons such as religions, human rights, culture, and politics. The violence has threatened the peace, harmony, and plurality in the community. One of the main sources of the violence is the uncontrolled aggressive instinct of the human being. In line with this issue, this article attempts to reintroduce religious, cultural, and social values that the people can use to control their provocative aggressive instinct and transform it into good deeds for the sake of the peace and harmony among the pluralistic society.

EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students of vocational high schools are requested to have skillful reading strategies to comprehend specific texts in English. To have a good comprehension, they utilize not only their strategies but also interesting and suitable texts. Therefore, this current study investigated the correlation between students’ perception of the authentic materials and cooperative learning strategy towards students’ reading comprehension. The data of the reading comprehension tests and the students’ perception were analyzed using the multiple regression. The result revealed that (1) there was positive correlation between students’ perception of the authentic materials and students reading comprehension, (2) there was significant positive effect of cooperative learning strategy towards reading comprehension, and (3) there was significant positive effect of reading materials towards cooperative learning strategy. These findings suggested that the choice of authentic materials could motivate students to comprehend ESP texts. Besides this, by doing cooperative learning strategy, the scaffolding could happen so that they could share their comprehension. In spite of its limitation, this study could have certain pedagogical implications to reading classroom activities.

Pengembangan tersebut dapat ditumbuhkan apabila didukung oleh suasana budaya akademik (academic culture) yang kuat di lembaga tersebut. Budaya akademik adalah suatu budaya yang tumbuh di perguruan tinggi yang mencerminkan sebuah suasana ilmiah dan ditandai oleh sejumlah aktivitas ilmiah melalui segenap kegiatannya, seperli aktivitas perkuliahan, seminar, kegiatan penelitian yang semua kegiatan tersebut disebarluaskan melalui publikasi-publikasi ilmiah dalam bentuk jurnal-jurnal ilmiah.

This research aims to identify the self construction and communicating acts amongst the homeless while they are doing their daily activities as a vagrant in downtown Jakarta. The method being used for this research is a qualitative method with phenomenologist paradigm which aims to understand human behaviors from an experimental perspective. Result shows that vagrants, especially those who has the same profession, tend to share the area of work in order to avoid conflicts among them. Description from the subject in establishing communication with other vagrants are done by sharing area of expertise from himself and other vagrants. Results also showed that almost all the subjects tend to close their “darker” side from others who don’t know that they are vagrants by impression management. These people came into existence not only because of a poor culture which shows nomadic type of living habit, but it’s also because of the structure and vast majority which sees them with a negative stigma for every type of occupation they choose including a forced action because they were left without any choices other being a vagrant.

Muhammadiyah dan Nahdlatul Ulama adalah dua organisasi sosial keagamaan yang dikenali
oleh seantero masyarakat. Hal ini menyebabkan ia mendapat perhatian daripada para
pengkaji untuk diselongkar rahsia-rahsia ilmiah, yang melibatkan para ilmuan tempatan
mahupun antarabangsa. Selain itu, ia juga disebabkan oleh struktur kepimpinan yang tersusun
rapi dan kukuh, bermula dari peringkat bawahan sehingga ke peringkat pusat (keseluruhan).
Gerakan Muhammadiyah mula ditubuhkan pada tahun 1912 oleh Kiyai Ahmad Dahlan
kerana keadaan masyarakat Islam Indonesia pada ketika itu yang mengalami kemunduran dan
kebekuan dalam berfikir terutamanya tentang kepercayaan masyarakat yang masih kuat
berpegang kepada perkara-perkara tahayul, bidaah, dan khurafat. Manakala Nahdlatul Ulama
pula ditubuhkan pada tahun 1926 oleh persatuan Kiyai-Kiyai di Jawa Timur, melalui pelbagai
konflik, antaranya berlakunya perbezaan pendapat antara KH. Wahab Chasbullah dengan KH.
Mas Mansyur dalam persatuan Taswir al-Afkar atau Nahdlatul Wathan (1916), serta masalah
Kongres al-Islam Hindia Timur (1926) yang diadakan oleh Raja Ibn Saud di Mekah. Justeru
itu, ia menjadi sangat menarik untuk dikaji terutamanya berkaitan dengan asal usul wujudnya
gerakan Muhammadiyah dan Nahdlatul Ulama di Indonesia serta perbezaan sejarah antara
kedua-dua organisasi tersebut. Walaupun organisasi Muhammadiyah dan Nahdlatul Ulama
hanyalah organisasi bersifat gerakan sosial keagamaan, namun terdapat perbezaan dalam
proses penubuhan gerakannya, yang melibatkan sejarah asal usul gerakan dan penubuhan,
karya penulisan dan pekerjaan para pengasasnya, langkah-langkah monumental, faktor-faktor
yang menyokong serta institusi pendidikannya. Perbezaan-perbezaan tersebut turut
mempengaruhi dinamika gerakan pendidikan masing-masing
